The promotion of subnational/regional competitiveness has become a priority for the RIAC. Three efforts have been selected: (i) dialogue, (ii) exchange of experiences, and (iii) technical assistance.

RIAC Expert Group on Subnational Competitiveness

In the framework of the Americas Competitiveness Forum in Cali, Colombia, the RIAC created the Working Group of Experts on Subnational Competitiveness (GTECS), with the objective to promote competitiveness in the hemisphere through the exchange of International experiences on subnacional competitiveness and the knowledge on the different methodologies in the elaboration of reports, measurements and competitiveness agendas in a provincial, state, sub-regional and city level.

National and regional forums

As part of this effort, every year in the framework of the Americas Competitiveness Forum the following activities are carried out: Regional Workshop for Officers of public, private and the academic sector of the Caribbean with the support of the Compete Caribbbean Program, the Panel of experts in Subnational Competitiveness, Competitiveness Meeting of Central American Authorities.

Similarly, support for national events is offered. For example, in response to the request received by the representative of Honduras to the RIAC in Cali, Colombia, to support in raising awareness and raising the issue of competitiveness in Honduras, developed in collaboration with the Honduran Council of Private Enterprise (COHEP), the Institute for Public Policy Research UNITEC and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) the Honduras Forum 2030 - International Experiences of Competitiveness (in Spanish).

Regional workshops and virtual meetings

The RIAC seeks to support the training of officials in the countries and for that conducts workshops like the one held at the TEC de Monterrey from June 7 to 9, 2011 with the slogan "Subnational Competitiveness: An Agenda for Public Policy":

Similarly, specialists of the TEC de Monterrey shared their experiences in developing indicators of subregional competitiveness and projects in Mexico with representatives of the countries in a classroom and virtually that was held at the OAS headquarters in Washington, DC on January 20, 2011.

Specialized support to countries

The Inter-American Competitiveness Network (RIAC) supported the participation of experts from the Technological Institute of Monterrey for the development and implementation of a model of competitiveness in the Brunca Region of Costa Rica, which arises from the need to strengthen the development of a region showing economic and social indicators lag behind the rest of the country.

In response to the call of the Government of Guatemala in their interest to reformulate their commercial code, from the OAS as Technical Secretariat of the RIAC, offered assistance in organizing a visit by officials from Guatemala to Colombia and Chile in 2012 to see the changes made in their legislation that have improved business climate.
